ブラウンコランダムはボーキサイト、無煙炭、鉄粉から作られ、2000度以上の高温で電気アークで精錬され、自動粉砕機で粉砕・成形され、磁気分離で鉄分が除去され、さまざまな粒度にふるい分けられます。ブラウンコランダムの主な化学成分はAL2O3で、含有量は94.5％～97％、Fe、Si、Tiなどの微量で、緻密な組織、高硬度、球状粒子が特徴です。セラミックス、樹脂高固結研磨材の製造に適しており、研削、研磨、サンドブラスト、鋳造などの用途にも使用できます。また、耐火材料の製造にも使用できます。

（１）耐熱性、耐腐食性、高強度等の特性を生かし、希少金属、貴金属、特殊合金、セラミックス等の精錬用鋼製スライディングノズル、製鉄用高炉のライニング（壁、パイプ）等に使用されています。
（２）硬度が高く、耐摩耗性に優れ、強度も高いため、化学システムでは各種反応容器やパイプライン、化学ポンプ部品、機械部品、伸線金型、鉛筆芯金型などの各種金型として使用されています。
（３）コランダム断熱材は、コランダム軽量レンガ、コランダム中空ボール、繊維製品など、耐高温性と断熱性を兼ね備えた各種高温炉の炉壁や屋根に広く使用されている。
